Johns Hopkins SAIS

About Project

Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) is one of the world’s leading graduate schools in international relations and global policy. With campuses in Washington, D.C., Europe (Bologna), and Asia (via the Hopkins-Nanjing Center), SAIS equips students with rigorous intellectual preparation, close access to decision-makers, and a deeply international environment. Its academic programs span masters, doctoral, and non-degree offerings.

I was contracted to consult on the design and implementation of a new Drupal website for SAIS. A full design process was undertaken. The site was implemented using Drupal 10. Its hosted and using Pantheon tooling. A WordPress theme of the same design was implemented a year later.

Custom Workflows Implemented

The JHU SAIS website was built to support seamless editorial workflows across multiple campuses and departments.

The JHU SAIS website was developed on Drupal 10, chosen for its flexibility, scalability, and robust content management capabilities — essential for an international institution with multiple campuses and editorial teams. Drupal’s structured architecture allows complex relationships between programs, faculty, and campuses to be managed seamlessly, ensuring that updates in one place automatically cascade throughout the site.

By leveraging Drupal 10’s modern features — including its intuitive admin interface, Layout Builder, and advanced permissions system — editors across Washington, Bologna, and Nanjing can collaborate efficiently within a single unified platform. The CMS’s built-in multilingual support, strong accessibility standards, and API-first approach make it ideal for a large academic organization that values performance, longevity, and flexibility. The result is a stable, future-ready foundation that allows SAIS to evolve its content, expand globally, and maintain an exceptional user experience across all regions.
